November 11 - December 7, 2024: World AIDS Day Book Fair and Series of Events
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared December 1st as World AIDS Day in 1988, with the goal of encouraging countries around the world to focus on developing AIDS prevention policies, providing medical care for those infected, and advancing research into an HIV vaccine. Every year, a theme is chosen to guide advocacy efforts across different sectors, calling on people to raise awareness, show care for those affected by HIV, and eliminate discrimination. The ultimate goal is to break down barriers to prevention and treatment, aiming for zero new HIV infections by 2030.
The theme for World AIDS Day 2024 is "Take the Rights Path," urging action to protect the health of every individual by safeguarding their rights. The path to ending AIDS is a human rights path, and the change needed is not a temporary fix but a movement. Therefore, implementing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and fostering inclusivity in all communities is critical to ending AIDS, ensuring sustainable development, and promoting human security. It is essential to abolish laws that harm people's rights and establish laws and practices that protect individual rights. Upholding human rights is a fundamental basis for effectively addressing HIV/AIDS.
